She inched closer to the edge and peered down below her. “Jump!” said a voice inside her head. “You’re not going to be able to do this,” said another voice. But she had to. The decision was taken. She just had to take the plunge.
A crowd was forming at the bottom now. People whispering amongst themselves, watching her every move. “Don’t do it!” someone shouted and that made her take a step back. But she had contemplated doing this for a while now. She wanted to get over with it, and she had to do it now. There was no other choice. A chill went down her spine.
She went to the edge again, closed her eyes, took in a final breath of the cool evening air, and jumped.
A few seconds later, she surfaced, swam to the edge of the pool and climbed out. She could hear the people clapping and felt several pats on her back.
“So how was it, jumping off the third floor diving board?” someone asked.
“Amazing!” came the reply.
